Homelessness has become a widespread epidemic across the nation. Since the onset of the pandemic, Housing and Urban Development reported that between 2019 and 2020, homelessness increased nationally among unsheltered populations and people experiencing chronic homelessness. About 582,000 Americans are experiencing homelessness, according to 2022 HUD data! Sadly, with the rising costs of inflation this number is becoming astronomical across the nation daily.
In 2022, Georgia ranked 10th in the United States for its homeless population, with 10,689 individuals experiencing homelessness, according to Datapandas 2023 reporting. Georgia's unsheltered homeless rate is quite significant, with 51.8% of the homeless population living without proper shelter, making it the 8th highest in the nation. The state has seen a 4.4% increase in homelessness since 2020, ranking 22nd among U.S. states for this change. Georgia also has a high number of illegal immigrants and ranks 6th in the nation. This too plays a significant role in the homeless population.
Since the closure of two primary mental health facilities in 2013, Albany Ga has experienced a significant increase of homeless individuals, many with mental health deficiencies among the homeless community.
According to the Mayor of Albany, Ga., Bo Dorough, in 2019, the homeless population in Albany has quadrupled, being reported by those working with the homeless community around 400 to 600 people at any given time. Chanice Ponder, the Community and Economic Development Albany Service Specialist says "the homeless population is increasing especially due to COVID. That number just continues to skyrocket."
I'm sure the accuracy of that number is to be determined being the fact that most homeless individuals are not recorded among the 2020 census report and neither are they registered to vote. Assuredly, that number is an implied guestimate at best.
Strong, integral community partnerships and collaboration with our state and local governments via funding, will prove to be vital in reaching our goal to not only decrease the onslaught of homelessness within our city and ultimately across the state but to favorably eradicate this cancer once and for all!
